فلم أجد على الحائط من خلفي - الحائط المنعكس في المرآة - سوى خزانة ملابس من الخشب الماهوجني الذي يرجع إلى العصر الفيكتوري، فليس هناك باب مفتوح ولا مسرح للعنف، فاستدرت مرة أخرى إلى المرآة، فوجدتها لا تعكس سوى خزانة الملابس .
أخذت أفرك عيني بيدي، ثم انطلقت عبر الغرفة وحاولت سحب خزانة الملابس إلى الأمام، وفي تلك اللحظة دخل نيل من الباب الآخر المطل على الممر، وسألني مندهشًا عما كنت أحاول فعله.
لا بد أنه ظن أنني قد جننت قليلًا عندما اندفعت إليه وسألته إذا كان هناك باب خلف خزانة الملابس، ولكنه قال لي نعم، حيث كان هناك باب يؤدي إلى الغرفة المجاورة، فسألته مَن يشغل هذه الغرفة، فقال عائلة تسمى عائلة أولدام وهي مكونة من الرائد أولدام وزوجته، فسألته بعد ذلك عما إذا كانت السيدة أولدام ذات شعر ذهبي، وعندما قال لي بطريقة جافة إن شعرها أسود، بدأت أدرك أنني أجعل نفسي أحمق أمام الآخرين، فاستجمعت شتات نفسي، وبررت له هذه الأسئلة ببعض المسوغات غير المنطقية، وذهبنا إلى الطابق السفلي معًا. أخبرت نفسي بأنني لا محالة قد أصبت بنوع من الهذيان، وشعرت بالخجل بشكل عام من نفسي وبأنني أحمق للغاية.
ثم قال نيل وهو يقدمني إلى أخته: "أختي سيلفيا"، فرأيت الوجه الجميل لتلك الفتاة التي رأيتها من فوري تختنق حتى الموت ... ثم قدمني إلى خطيبها، كان رجلًا طويلًا أسود الشعر، لديه ندبة على الجانب الأيسر من وجهه.
حسنًا، هكذا الأمر إذن، وأود منك أن تفكر وتقول ماذا كنت لتفعل لو كنت في مكاني. هذه هي الفتاة، هي بعينها، وهذا هو الرجل الذي رأيته يخنقها، وكانا سيتزوجان في غضون شهر تقريبًا ...
هل كانت لديَّ قدرة تنبؤية بالمستقبل، أم أن الأمر ليس كذلك؟ هل يمكن أن تأتي سيلفيا وزوجها إلى هنا ليقضيا بعض الوقت في المستقبل، ويُمنحا تلك الغرفة باعتبارها (أفضل غرفة خالية)؟ وهل سيتحقق هذا المشهد المريع الذي رأيته في الواقع؟
ما الذي كان يجب عليَّ أن أفعله حيال ذلك؟ هل يمكنني أن أفعل أي شيء؟ وهل يمكن أن يصدقني نيل، أو أن تصدقني الفتاة نفسها؟
أخذت أقلِّب هذه المسألة في ذهني مرارًا وتكرارًا طوال الأسبوع الذي كنت فيه هناك، فهل أخبرهم أم لا؟ ولكن حدث أمر آخر زاد الأمور تعقيدًا، فقد وقعت في حب سيلفيا كارسليك منذ الوهلة الأولى التي رأيتها هنا ... وأصبحَتْ أكثرما أتوق إليه في هذه الدنيا... ووجدت أن هذا الأمر يقيدني بطريقة ما.

You may return most new, unopened items within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. We'll also pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.).
